Chapter 46: Prioritizing

Ch 46 prioritizing

George Carlin, wry cynical comedian who was afraid of dentists for 20 years, finds Richard Pryor, who has reinvented himself as an ART atraumatic dentist.

Pryor’s clinic is at Plaza Zapato in the Zona Rio of Tijuana. George relaxes on the sofa after a relaxing treatment.

Richard Pryor = RP

George Carlin = GC

RP: Them mf’s wouldn’t let me in that dental college. So I had to go to Tanzania and learn it there. Instead of four years it was two months. Tuition? Less than one percent including airfare and room and board at the Safari.

GC: And you think you can do dentistry better now?

RP: Beats all them suckers who paid for four years of shit.

GC: Well, your atraumatic restorative treatment did a damn good job on my chompers last week. That’s why I came back.

RP: And they told you you’d need six root canals and crowns, right?

GC: I was quoted five grand on it.

RP: And I charged you three hundred.

GC: That’s right, Richie. That’s right. I gotta be careful I don’t call you boy.

RP: Boy don’t matter. It’s better than some of the other street shit I’m hearing.

GC: Wayyyyy better.

RP: Listen George. You got in deep, deep shit for going too close to the dark empire. And they don’t like that. Let me tell you, I’m not black. I’m soul. My color is pure light.

GC: I knew that, Richard. I knew it.

RP: Yah. When they try and pull that color shit on everyone, they just do that to divide and conquer. That’s why I’m pure light, George. I identify as sunshine, buddy.

GC: You are damn sunshine, boy! Oops. I mean, you work good and cheap, Richard. You just did four high quality restorations and you didn’t even have to drill.

RP: That’s my ART, George.

GC: That’s your ART, Richard. Besides, your hyper-vulgar swearing is better with a gentle scrape than with a shrieking whine after a long needle.

RP: You got that right, George. And your deep hippie brooding goes better with a genuine smile than with a synthetic full mouth reconstruction smile at 30 grand.

GC: Richard, how long you gonna keep this gig going? You’re not even licensed by the boards.

RP: I’m licensed by the stand-up comedy board, and that’s the only board that matters.

GC: You’re totally right, Richard. You’re totally right.

RP: Cash or card, George?
